Glasgow Hospital Project – Bespoke Medical-Grade HVAC / AHU Upgrades and AHU Refurbishments

Discover how CLP Air Group delivered a bespoke HVAC and AHU upgrade at Glasgow Hospital, ensuring energy efficiency, compliance with HTM requirements, and minimal disruption.

Project Overview

With over 30 years of service, the existing air handling equipment at the hospital was becoming unreliable and no longer met modern building standards. A comprehensive solution was required to upgrade and modernise the hospital’s HVAC systems while minimising disruption to its critical operations.

Meeting the Challenge

A full assessment was carried out on the existing equipment, and a detailed analysis was conducted to balance the needs of a new system. This ensured compliance with the latest HTM requirements while addressing the tight space restrictions and access logistics.

Pre-commissioning checks were performed to determine the existing system temperatures and air volumes. Using these figures, we analysed the required design volume of the AHUs and the temperature requirements for the new systems, formulating a design for high-efficiency, HTM specification-compliant AHUs.

Collaborating closely with our long-term client and consulting engineers, we delivered a phased refurbishment and installation plan over 18 months. This approach ensured minimal impact on the hospital’s day-to-day activities while meeting its stringent operational requirements.

Innovative Design and Installation

Key project highlights included:

Installation of seven new AHUs, featuring:

  • High-efficiency counterflow heat exchangers for superior energy recovery.
  • Low-pressure hot water (LPHW) coils for primary and reheat applications.
  • Chilled water cooling coils for effective temperature control.
  • Direct-driven, high-efficiency EC fans to optimise performance and energy savings.
  • External AHU’s complete with service corridors. This is to ensure maintenance can be carried out in any conditions and to protect both the AHU casework and maintenance personnel.

Minimising disruption:

  • All equipment was delivered outside normal working hours to streamline positioning within the plant room.
  • Sectional AHUs were assembled on-site and pressure-tested to ensure reliability and compliance with HTM standards.

Refurbishment of seven existing AHUs, including:

  • Upgrading to new EC fans for reduced energy consumption.
  • Installing new heating and cooling coils to enhance system performance and efficiency.
  • New door hardware and gaskets/seals to improve airtightness and reduce leakage, enhancing overall energy efficiency and running costs.

Results

Our tailored approach ensured the hospital’s HVAC and AHU infrastructure is now fully modernised, energy-efficient, and compliant with contemporary healthcare standards—all while maintaining uninterrupted patient care.

Client feedback

“We were extremely impressed with the way CLP Air Group handled the project. All works were to a high standard, the project was managed very well with minimal site disruption. We would look forward to working with CLP Air Group again on any future projects that arise.”
